How to Choose the Right Oil filter for Your Car

oil filter element
oil filter

Because the main weight of the oil filter comes from the metal shell, in theory, the heavier the oil filter, the thicker the shell, and the stronger the explosion-proof and anti-collision performance.

But thicker is not always better, it mainly depends on the quality of the metal shell material, so this weight is just for everyone’s reference and cannot be used to evaluate the quality of the machine filter.

weight of oil filters

You can see the weighing results from the picture above. The oil filter element of the F oil filter is the heaviest, weighing 242.6 grams. The weights of the A oil filter, B oil filter, and C oil filter are also more than 240 grams, while the D oil filter element weighs more than 240 grams. The weight of the filter is only 218.1 grams, which is as average as its price. The E oil filter is the lightest, only 183.4 grams.

Of course, there is another small detail, that is, only the filter sealing ring of the B oil filter comes with lubricating oil when leaving the factory. The sealing rings of the other five filter elements do not have lubricating oil. This B oil filter does a good job.

Oil filter paper comparison

For this comparison test, I cut open all 6 filter elements.

After taking out the filter paper of the six filter elements, you can see the difference at a glance, because except for the E oil filter, which has paper sealing covers on the top and bottom of the filter paper, the other five filter elements have metal sealing caps on the top and bottom of the filter paper. This also explains The reason why the E oil filter is the lightest in the previous test.

oil filters

The second is the difference in details and workmanship of the sealant of the filter paper. The A oil filter, C oil filter, and E oil filter are better at details. Basically, there is no glue overflow at all, while the B oil filter, D oil filter, and The F oil filter has obvious glue overflow. Although this does not affect the use of the machine filter, it reflects the factory’s workmanship details.

oil filter material

Then I used a macro camera to magnify all six filter papers 30 times. The magnified filter papers all looked the same, except that the fibers of the A oil filter looked thicker and thinner, while the fibers of the B oil filter looked thicker. Obviously, there are a little more. The fibers of the C oil filter look a little thinner, while the fibers of the D oil filter, E oil filter and F oil filter all look very similar in thickness.

Measure their filtration area

Finally, measure their filtration area. The measurement method is very simple. I use a vernier caliper to measure the width of each fold of the oil filter element, and then measure the length of each fold of the filter element. Then I can get the area of each fold, and then multiply it by two. It is the filtration area of one fold of paper. Finally, count the number of folds of the filter element to calculate the filtration area.

Theoretically, the larger the filtration area of the filter paper, the faster the filtration speed of the engine oil under the unit pressure per unit time, and the greater the dust holding capacity of the filter paper, so this is also a test of the machine filter’s durability and filtration effect. an indicator.

Of course, this is also related to the material and technology of the filter paper itself, so I just calculated the approximate value of the filter area for your reference only and will not evaluate the quality.

I won’t go into details about the process of counting. The filter paper of A oil filter has the largest filtration area, about 749.133 square centimeters. The filter paper of C oil filter has the smallest filtration area, only 583.681 square centimeters. However, the filter paper of C oil filter seems to be six types. The filter element is the thickest, so the filtering volume of the C oil filter should not be bad.

What surprised me was that the filter paper filtration area of the E oil filter reached 748.210 square centimeters, directly catching up with the A oil filter! Although it is cheap, the filter paper is the largest among the six filter elements. But the workmanship and sorting of the filter paper are relatively sloppy.

Bypass valve pressure comparison

The oil filter bypass valve is a switch with a spring and a gasket at the bottom of the oil filter. Its function is when the engine is cold started, the oil viscosity is very high. The filter paper is blocked by impurities. And the engine is working under high load. In order to ensure that the engine always has enough oil to participate in lubrication. This bypass valve will be pushed open by high oil pressure, allowing the oil to return directly to the engine without filtering through filter paper.

Therefore, the setting of the switching pressure threshold of this valve is very critical. If it is set relatively large and allows as much oil to pass through the filter paper. The filtering effect of the oil can be improved, but it may also cause the engine to lack enough oil under special circumstances. To lubricate, causing premature engine wear.

However, if the threshold is set too small, although it can ensure that the engine has enough oil lubrication anytime and anywhere, the cleanliness of the oil may not be enough, and more carbon deposits will easily remain in the oil pipeline, especially on the piston rings.

This also explains why cars that often go off the track need to change their oil frequently. Because long-term violent driving will cause the oil pressure to be too high. So the machine filter will not play a big role, and the oil will get dirty very quickly. So you need to change the engine oil frequently.

The method of measuring the pressure of the bypass valve

The method of measuring the pressure of the bypass valve is very simple. First, measure the area of the iron plate of the bypass valve. And then using a push-pull force detector to detect how much force it takes to completely press the bypass valve to the bottom. Then you can calculate the bypass valve. The required pressure when the valve is fully open.

I first measured the bypass valve pressure value of a certain brand of original machine filter, which was 2.99bar. This value is relatively moderate, because the oil pressure of ordinary family cars is generally between 2bar and 5bar.

I won’t go into details about the measurement process one by one, just look at the results.

The C oil filter has the highest bypass valve pressure, reaching 3.06 bar, which is higher than the original filter bypass valve of this brand. The other five filter bypass valves have lower pressures than the original ones. The lowest is A oil filters, the bypass valve pressure is only 2.21bar. The closest pressure value of the brand’s original machine filter bypass valve is E oil filter. Which is 2.93bar, it seems that E oil filter has good control over the data Still very strict.

So how do we choose the filter element suitable for our car based on this pressure value?

In fact, it is very simple. The advantage of high bypass valve pressure is to ensure that the engine oil is filtered through filter paper in more cases. Which ensures that the oil inside the engine is cleaner and extends the service life of the engine oil. There will also be less carbon deposits. However, the disadvantage is that the pressure of the bypass valve is relatively high. So if you suddenly step on the accelerator and drive violently. The bypass valve may not open and close in time. Resulting in a slight reduction in the engine oil supply in a short period of time, causing some additional damage to the engine. of wear and tear.

The advantage of low pressure in the bypass valve is that if the driving style is more violent. Then the low pressure of the bypass valve switch can ensure that in most cases. There is enough oil to lubricate various parts of the engine, but the disadvantage is that the oil often It will pass through the bypass valve instead of the filter paper. So the engine oil will get dirty quickly, so the oil replacement cycle must be shortened accordingly.

Of course, the above test is my manual measurement of the pressure value of the bypass valve. The accuracy is definitely not enough. It is just for your reference and discussion!

Check Valve Combustion Test of oil filter

oil filter

The function of the engine filter check valve is to seal the oil inlet of the engine filter through its own toughness after the engine is turned off. To prevent the oil pipeline from emptying due to the continued flow of oil. Because once there is a drain in the oil pipeline If the engine is empty. It will cause the engine to dry grind for a short period of time the next time it is started. Especially in the cold engine state, it will also cause serious wear and tear of the engine.

Therefore, the material and high temperature resistance of the check valve are very important. At present, the main materials of the check valve are rubber and high-performance silica gel. There are two main ways for us ordinary people to quickly judge rubber and silica gel, weighing and burning.

The second method to burn

But here, because the sizes and volumes of the six check valves are completely different, weighing them does not make any sense. I can only use the second method to burn. The smoke from burning silica gel is white, and a white residue will remain after complete combustion. Powder, while the smoke from most rubber burning is black, and nitrile rubber will also have crackling flames when burning, so it is easy to judge.

I won’t go into details about the combustion process. After the combustion, I learned that among the six check valves, only the A oil filters and C oil filter should be made of silicone material. While the B oil filter, D oil filter, E oil filter, and F oil filter elementshould be made of silicone. The filters should be made of rubber material, which of course complies with the pricing of A oil filter and C oil filter. After all, the prices of both of them are relatively high. So check valves with better materials should really be used.

Conclusion

The most cost-effective one is the E oil filters. The filter paper area is large enough, the bypass valve pressure is very close to the original one, the check valve is also made of silicone. And the price is very cheap. If you are looking for the oil to last longer and extend the maintenance cycle. Then this machine filter of C oil filter will be more suitable for you.
